La conférence sur « Agriculture écologique : atténuer le changement climatique, assurer la sécurité alimentaire et l’autonomie pour les sources de revenus ruraux en Afrique » s’est tenue à Addis – Abéba (Ethiopie) du 26 au 28 novembre 2008. Elle a été organisée par l’Union Africaine (UA), l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’Alimentation et l’Agriculture (FAO) et le Ministère de l’Agriculture et du Développement Rural d’Ethiopie, en collaboration avec l’Institut du Développement Durable (ISD) d’Ethiopie et le Réseau Tiers Monde (TWN: Third World Network)). Plus de 80 personnes de 15 pays africains ont participé à la Conférence.– Bénin, Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopie, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria, Ouganda, Rwanda, Soudan, Tanzanie, Zambie et Zimbabwe- Parmi les participant figuraient des décideurs politiques, des experts en agriculture représentant leurs gouvernements, des ONG, des organisations paysannes, des universités, ainsi que des représentant des organisme internationaux et régionaux comme l’UA, la FAO, la Conférence des Nations Unies pour le Commerce et le Développement (CNUCED), le PNUE-CNUCED CBTF, l’Institut International pour la Recherche en Politique Alimentaire (IIRPA), Evaluation Internationale du Savoir Agricole, Science et Technologie pour le Développement (IAASTD et le Programme Alimentaire Mondial (PAM). La Conférence a été précédée d’une visite de terrain à Axum dans la région du Tigray au Nord de l’Ethiopie, du 23 au 25 novembre 2008, pour rencontrer les communautés de paysans petits producteurs avec lesquelles le Bureau Régional pour l’Agriculture et le Développement de l’Ethiopie et l’ISD travaillent sur l’agriculture écologique depuis 1996. Cette expérience a permis de focaliser l’attention sur les aspects de l’écosystème qui peuvent répondre facilement à une gestion appropriée, afin de stimuler la discussion sur des expériences relatives à l’augmentation de la production agricole, l’atténuation ou l’adaptation au changement climatique et à la réalisation des Objectifs du Millénaire pour le Développement (OMD) en Afrique. Voici les principaux points de vue, conclusions et recommandations exprimés par les participants au cours de la Conférence. Les recommandations détaillées des groupes de travail qui ont débattu certains sujets de façon approfondie sont annexées au présent rapport.
