Ever since FOREST EUROPE endorsed criteria and indicators (C&I) for sustainable forest management, FAO, FOREST EUROPE and UNECE have been working together to report on quantitative indicators in the pan-European region. The three secretariats (FOREST EUROPE liaison units, FRA and the Joint UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section) have collaborated with experts and national correspondents to develop related reporting systems, collect and review national data, and manage and disseminate collected information. This collaboration was further developed in 2020 pan-European data collection process, which was coordinated by the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2020.

The pan-European data for the 2025 reporting cycle will be again collected jointly through an improved FRA platform that now uses the same interface for both data collection processes.
