The 1958 inventory received responses from 143 countries and territories (88 percent of the global forest area). This information was supplemented by 13 country responses (2 percent of the global forest area) to the 1953 questionnaire and 5 country responses (3 percent of the global forest area) to the 1947 questionnaire. Changes made to definitions and concepts affected comparability with the previous inventory.
