Rome Italy 18/05/2017

The Fifth Plenary Meeting of the G77 and China of the year was held in the FAO's Red Room on May 18, with the participation of the members of the Group and among the events to be highlighted is the presence of the Director of Production and Animal Health Division, Mr. Berhe Tekola.

Among different points, Mr. Tekola recalled the importance of livestock in both the economy and the diet of a healthy community. He also mentioned how the presence of livestock contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and how through livestock you can reach goals, such as: the eradication of poverty and hunger; good health and well-being in general; quality in education; gender equality; clean water and sanitation; renewable energy at affordable prices; decent work and economic growth; industry, innovation and infrastructure; reduces inequalities; eco-sustainable cities; responsible production and consumption; action for the climate; among other things.

Director Tekola also pointed out the need to establish a livestock subcommittee, which would allow direct participation in discussions and decisions in the sector, as well as member countries to address specific issues related to livestock within the multisectoral nature of COAG. This Sub-Committee would specifically be a forum for consultation and advice.  Tekola also noted that such an action would cost approximately US $ 120,000 per biennium excluding the staff.
