With export sales in 2017 already reaching 13,500 tons valued at approximately $25 million, Colombia is currently the third largest avocado exporter in the world, behind Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

According to official reports, the rise in exports of this tropical fruit is a result of the opening of new markets, mainly in the United States and Europe with the hass variety.

Seeing as Colombia sold only $171,000 of the fruit in 1971, the cultivation of avocados, or palta as it's also called in South America, has advanced considerably within the country's agricultural production.
