Capacity development workshop on National Forest Funds and Payments for Ecosystem Services, Cambodia

The Incentives for Ecosystem Services (IES) project presented the IES approach during the Capacity development workshop on National Forest Funds and and Payments for Environmental Services organized by FAO's Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism from 26 to 28 April 2016 in  Seam Reap Province, Cambodia.

The training aimed to:

  • Collect up-to-date knowledge on National Forest Funds (NFF), the development of Incentives for Ecosystem Services (IES) and Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES), and to access to related expertise;
  • Learn from NFF, IES and PES experts how to design, establish and manage NFF adapted to their Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) related needs and incentive requirements, including for IES, PES and REDD+ purposes, and improved coordination of existing public and private finance;
  • Develop and confront ideas for adapting existing NFFs to implement a PES scheme and/or a REDD+ action plan using a package of incentives;
  • Plan expertise and financial needs for effectively adapting existing NFFs, in particular in view of effective IES/PES/REDD+ implementation; and,
  • Enable the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the Ministry of Environment (MoE) to dispose of specific recommendations and orientations on how to adapt the existing NFF integrating PES, REDD+ and other IES perspectives.

The workshop will support FAO's FLRM team to develop a pilot site to implement forest and landscape restoration with the use of multiple incentives to support farmers and forest managers implement more sustainable production and conservation activities.
