To reduce the risks from contamination associated with production practices of fresh produce and promote market opportunities, FAO and the UN System in Tanzania in partnership with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the horticultural industry are devoting efforts to develop training materials. This Manual aims at contributing to create awareness of the different aspects to be considered when implementing good agricultural practices (GAP). It is addressed to extension agents, the private sector and junior policy makers engaged in improving agricultural practices and ensuring food safety. Emphasis is placed on applying GAP and good manufacturing practices (GMP) throughout the food chain. The Manual is divided in four Chapters. Chapter 1 emphasizes the importance of GAP in the horticultural supply chain. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the organizational strategies to enhance competitiveness in horticultural chains. Chapter 3 describes in detail the different elements of GAP. Chapter 4 gives directions for trainers on how to develop an effective training course. The Annex 1 presents a number of additional resources related to quality assurance and certification systems on GAP.
