Knowledge management and learning processes enable organizations to generate, capture, analyze and share evidence, insights, experiences and expertise from relevant stakeholders. By making operational knowledge and lessons learned accessible and usable, knowledge management and learning support informed decision-making and adaptive management.
In food crisis and protracted crisis contexts, emergency agricultural assistance plays a critical role in protecting livelihoods, safeguarding food production and addressing acute food insecurity. Combined with longer-term strategies, it contributes to building resilient agricultural livelihoods and rural communities in the face of future disasters and crises, leaving no one behind.
Across FAO's emergency and resilience portfolio, country-level interventions generate a wealth of evidence, operational experience, lessons learned and innovation every day. When systematically captured, analyzed, shared and utilized, this knowledge strengthens programming, informs policy and advocacy, and improves the effectiveness of responses to food crises. Knowledge management and learning enable organizations to connect insights across interventions, countries and regions, helping to:
- identify what works, why it works and under what conditions;
- apply learning across technical domains, programmes and contexts; and
- support continuous improvement in emergency and resilience interventions.
The Knowledge Platform on Emergencies and Resilience (KORE) supports efforts to address food crises by connecting and leveraging FAO's evidence, analyses and operational experience from emergency agricultural assistance and resilience-building interventions.
KORE transforms knowledge generated across country operations and partnerships into accessible and actionable insights for programming, advocacy and resource mobilization. By promoting learning, collaboration and the utilization of good practices and lessons learned, KORE also helps strengthen decision-making and improve the effectiveness and impact of interventions.

Intercropping & conditional cash assistance in the West Bank
Cultivable land in the West Bank remains significantly underutilized with low planting density, particularly in olive orchards. By adopting intercropping practices, farming families can make more efficient use of their land by simultaneously planting cereals, animal fodder and other legumes.
With financial support from the Government of Canada between 2023 and 2025, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations transferred USD 1.94 million in conditional cash assistance to 2 692 farming families to incentivize the adoption of intercropping practices, while lowering the financial risks associated with cultivating land.

At the heart of effective knowledge management and learning lies a strong foundation of data, evidence and analysis. Real impact happens when data and evidence are systematically generated and transformed into knowledge that informs action.
At FAO, robust data – impact evaluations, context monitoring and assessments, performance and process monitoring are translated into practical insights, lessons and solutions that support decision-making across emergency and resilience programmes. Ensuring that the evidence produced, is collated, shared and applied, creates a continuous pathway from data to learning, and from learning to more effective action.
