Commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under the NAP-Ag project “Supporting Developing Countries to Integrate the Agricultural Sectors into National Adaptation Plans (NAPs)”, this study analyses the agricultural sector-related drivers (incentives) and institutional barriers to implementation of Kenya’s NAP. It further defines specific strategies to strengthen institutional and regulatory framework for climate change adaptation planning, in reference to the institutional barriers, and proposes a framework to operationalize the NAP. Ir provides a good country example on how to develop and implement a NAP.

This document identifies how implementing the adaptation aspect of Nationally Determined Contribution (NDCs) can be implemented through the NAP process. This module also outlines how to effectively integrate a country’s NDC activities through their NAP. This module explains how countries can implement the adaptation component of their NDCs. It outlines the synergies between areas of finance and mitigation and adaptation goals and activities of NDC implementation can be achieved in the NAP process

This report outlines agriculture practices that boost ecosystem services, the third section specifically outlines policiey options to mainstream the practices into production systems. The section showcases how biodiversity can be used for building resilience through the promotion of ecosystem services. The report outlines the current international policy frameworks that can promote these policies. A case study on Kenya outlining the policies that support the strengthening of ecosystem services across all sectors, it reviews current activities and provides policy reccomendations to improve and adapt ecosystem services to climate change.

The Agro-Ecological Zoning (AEZ) methodology is the primary tool used for land resources assessment. It is a modeling framework for crop potential assessment which uses detailed agronomic-based knowledge to assess land suitability, potential attainable yields and potential production of crops for specified management assumptions and input levels, both for rain-fed and irrigated conditions. The GAEZ data portal provides reliable information and knowledge on sustainable management of natural resources for food and agriculture to support policy decisions on food and agriculture at national, regional and global level, assists users with rational land-use planning on the basis of an inventory of land resources and evaluation of the biophysical limitations and production potentials of land. This tool is useful when planning for adaptation and selecting optimal agricultural production systems and options.

This report presents the key outcomes and messages of the Planning for aquaculture diversification: the importance of climate change and other drivers workshop, which took place in 2016. It presents the main strategies for aquaculture diversification, highlights some primary drivers and proposes general principles that can help guide diversification in aquaculture. Seen as an adaptation approach to climate change, users will gain knowledge on planning for adaptation.

This paper examines the likely ecosystem and landscape changes that will occur in forests, mountains, wetlands, coastal areas, savannahs, grasslands and steppes. Impacts include changes in physical conditions, weather patterns and ecosystem functioning. It provides case studies of activities undertaken by countries to preserve the native biodiversity from the changing climate.  This document is useful for policy makers to increase their knowledge in biodiversity and for the mainstreaming of biodiversity in adaptation planning.

This publication highlights the potential to adapt and mitigate to climate change within the framework of the watershed management approach.  It showcases good practices through some selected case studies (from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Uganda) and draws out key messages on the importance to integrate adaptation and mitigation in the watershed management approach. By presenting how watershed management contributes to building resilience, it is a useful basis of information when planning for adaptation.  Rwanda.

This repository of adaptation indicators, which draws from some of the latest experiences in adaptation Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E), is intended to illustrate possible adaptation indicators and their application context, supporting the selection and context-specific formulation of indicators. It seeks to provide support to adaptation, development as well as M&E experts who are involved in developing and implementing adaptation M&E systems at regional, national and sub-national levels. It systematically presents various indicators from a range of sectors that track different aspects of the adaptation context, process and results to determine if adaptation strategies or investments are meeting their objectives. This will support planners when monitoring adaptation actions of their National Adaptation Plan.

This publication provides an outline on cost benefit analysis and other fianacial activities for examining the agricultural value chain for entry points for adaptation. It discusses the synergies between NDC implementation and the NAP process in areas like economic assessment and finanacial anlysis.  This document is useful for policy-makers for directing economic and financial evaluation of the agricultural sectors at the formulation stage of a NAP. It is useful at a national and farm level to help the policy-maker to identify the economic cost for adaptation. It also provides examples for adaptation and mitigation of the agricultural sector with the economic arguement at a national level.
