Many family farmers face unfavorable terms in the market and value chains, as well as various degrees of asymmetric negotiations with intermediaries responsible for transport, distribution and sales, which burdens different groups of rural producers. In this search of new ways to engage with the market, labelling and certification schemes are some of the solutions to empower family farmers and Indigenous Peoples’ food systems in striving for a more systemic market access.

In the context of the First Global Forum of the UN Decade of Family Farming 2019-2028, and the recent publication on “Labelling and certification schemes for Indigenous Peoples’ Foods”, this Thematic Dialogue aims to explore the framework and policies on Family Farming and the importance of tailored policies on Indigenous Peoples. The Dialogue will also explore replicable practices of labelling and certification conducted by Indigenous Peoples that could be example for family farmers all over the world.
