FOOD FOR THE CITIES
From home gardening to urban food supply, FAO supports city farmers in developing countries. Mayors and City government officials are encouraged to play a bigger role in sustaining the efforts of low income food growers in cities, by improving access to land and water, credit, market and other services. The following are interviews by FAO Radio's Liliane Kambirigi with urban development experts who visited FAO, recently. Constraints and progress:

Facilitating access to land water for urban farmers: Bulawayo (Zimbabwe) and Cape Town (South Africa) are major pilot projects of the Harare based-Municipal Development Programme for Eastern and Southern Africa (MDP-ESA). Mr Takawira Mubvami is one of its Programme Officers. He elaborates:

Cairo, the Egyptian megalopolis, expands rapidly due to overpopulation. National Economists like Prof. Ahlam El-Naggar, Head of Economics Affairs Sector in the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, are concerned with the fate of some 24 agricultural producers' organizations and cooperatives in peripheral farming areas, along the Nile River.
