Strengthening Capacity and Investment in the Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa (HoA) region faces serious challenges in stimulating agricultural growth and investment. With a population of over 230 million people, much of the land is arid or semi-arid. Despite significant recent economic growth, many areas are hampered by recurring droughts and civil strife, leading to youth migration, serious food insecurity and malnutrition, among other challenges. This project aimed to support the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in promoting agricultural growth and food and nutrition security through increased investments in sustainable agriculture, inter-regional trade in the HoA region and trade with the Arabian Peninsula.

Resultados obtenidos

By engaging key stakeholders, including development partners, member states, civil society organizations and the private sector, the project raised awareness on the critical role of agricultural investments to promote food security and nutrition. The project strengthened capacity and coordination mechanisms for food security, nutrition and agricultural development programmes and initiatives in the HoA region. The domestication of the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) was supported, and the Regional Agricultural Investment Plan (RAIP) was prepared and endorsed by key stakeholders in IGAD member states.

Repercusiones

In the longer term, this project will increase investment opportunities for both the private and public sectors and contribute to more efficient and effective investment and policy support, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. Enhanced institutional strengthening and resilience building will support sustainable agriculture and rural development, improve interregional trade and contribute to reduced poverty and hunger, thereby benefitting communities throughout the HoA region.

Actividades

  • Stakeholder consultation workshops, trainings and high-level business meetings organized to identify, discuss, agree upon and coordinate policy commitments and resource mobilization and investment strategies.
  • Preparation, validation and endorsement of a regional investment plan under the CAADP.
  • Enhanced awareness of the IGAD-RAIP, with the aim of leveraging funding commitments to support its implementation.
