This extensive biannual study analyses the status of food security, livelihoods, nutrition and sanitation in the Karamojong region in Uganda. The report highlights areas where interventions need to be scaled up, especially those that have a poor access to food. The study emphasizes the positive impact of livestock on household nutritional status and provides statistical evidence: “Household livestock ownership had a significant association with malnutrition. The more the number of TLUs [tropical livestock units] a household had, the less was the risk of having a malnourished child.

The World Bank’s Global Center on Conflict, Security, and Development, currently the Fragility, Conflict, and Violence Cross-Cutting Solutions Area (FCV CCSA), in 2014 commissioned this note to enhance understanding of the connection between pastoralism and the recent increase in instability and violence in the Sahel, as well as the conditions under which the development of the pastoralist economy can actually enhance regional stability. The note seeks to offer guidance to international, national, and local decision makers on the drivers of conflict and instability that are most related to pastoral communities, as well as possible measures to reduce violence and enhance stability in the Sahel.

The division of labour and the role of women in relation to pasture management and livestock rearing is changing due to continuous migration of men from rural areas. Such a situation has left women in a precarious position – they face insecurity from absentee husbands and other challenges such as rapidly degrading pastures.

In May 2016, Tajik and international NGOs operating in the field of pasture rehabilitation and livestock development came together for a workshop on gender. This policy note summarizes the discussions that took place at the workshop and makes recommendations to tackle some aspects of the problems discussed.

Not all forms of livestock production are wasteful and energy-intensive. People who herd animals or combine livestock keeping and cropping at a smaller scale – called pastoralists or agro-pastoralists – can sustainably produce meat, milk, and other animal products. But they require support, especially in resource (e.g. pasture) management, livestock health, and marketing. This policy brief presentes the advantages of pastoralism and explains its untapped potential.
