The Right to Food

Save the date: 14th Policies against Hunger Conference

Events - 20.06.2023

Rome- Under the topic “Human rights-based approaches to food systems transformation", the 14th Policies against Hunger Conference provides a platform for the exchange between different stakeholders and aims to commonly develop guidelines for food systems transformation that can be derived from a human rights perspective.

The event will bring together representatives from politics and administration, international organizations, civil society, the private sector and academia to exchange views on the transformation of food systems internationally and to discuss how to shift to a systems approach in order to make food systems more sustainable, resilient and just.

Common findings and recommendations of conference participants will inform international efforts to advance food systems transformation, in the context of the 2030 Agenda, the follow-up to the United Nations (UN) Food Summit and the work in the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS), as well as national policy-making.

As the UN Specialized Agency with the mandate to end hunger and malnutrition in all its forms, strengthen food security and healthy diets, and to promote agriculture and sustainable development, FAO will play a prominent role at the Conference, advocating for and providing technical guidance on the right to food. In particular, FAO´s Deputy-Director Beth Bechdol will be opening the event; Alejandro Grinspun, Righ to Food Team Leader, will be participating in the working group 2 on the role of smallholders in food systems transformation; and Sarah Brand, expert from the Right to Food Team, and Francesca Romano, Land Tenure Office, will be speaking in the working group 4 on better governance to transform our food systems.

Organized by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture since 2001, “Policies against Hunger” conferences aim to bring hunger and malnutrition into the spotlight of international discussions on food security.
