Training Workshop on Monitoring and Protecting of the Right to Adequate Food in Nagarkot, Nepal

In the context of the project "Integrating the Right to Adequate Food and Good Governance in National Policies, Legislation and Institutions", a training workshop on monitoring and protecting the right to adequate food was held in Nagarkot, Nepal on 7-9 November 2012. The training workshop marked the beginning of activities in Nepal under the project. It was convened jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Nepal National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in collaboration with Food-first Information and Action Network (FIAN) Nepal, the Nepal National Women Commission and the Nepal Justice and Rights Institute (JuRi-Nepal).

“A short account from a mission to El Salvador”

El Salvador – October 2012. FAO contributed to the capacity strengthening on the right to food of Parliamentarians in several countries. In that context, the team of the project Right to Food at Country Level, managed by the Right to Food Team of FAO, organized a mission to El Salvador in October 2012, in light of the strong will from various actors in the country as well as the support of the FAO Representation in El Salvador.

CFS 39 Right to Food Side Event
Experts share lessons learned on the Right to Food

22 October 2012, Rome – A joint Committee on World Food Security (CFS) side event by the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, OHCHR and FAO took place on 19 October 2012 at FAO Headquarters. Under the headline “The transformational power of the right to food: Countries pioneering right to food strategies”, the event focused on national-level experiences of setting up legal and institutional frameworks for the realization of the right to adequate food.

Mozambique officially approves the Organic Statute of the Technical Secretariat for Food Security and Nutrition (SETSAN)

July 2012, Rome (Italy) – A milestone of institutional strengthening was reached on 21 March 2012, when the the Comissão Interministerial da Função Pública approved SETSAN’s Organic Statute which has been made official through the Decree No. 7/2012. The new Statute gives SETSAN juridical status, higher administrative independence - including in the management of human and financial resources, and enjoys an official mandate which protects its coordination role, also in a decentralized structure.

RIO+20 The Future We Want….The Right to Food

Rio+20 is the short name for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development and will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 20 to 22 of June 2012. It is a historic opportunity to define pathways to a sustainable future for mankind. For FAO, “The Future We Want” will not materialize as long as hunger and malnutrition persist, and it will not materialize without sustainable management of agriculture and food systems.

The right to food and global strategic frameworks: a window of opportunity

We are pleased to announce the publication of The right to food and global strategic frameworks: The Global Strategic Framework for Food Security and Nutrition (GSF) and the UN Comprehensive Framework for Action (CFA). It shows how the right to adequate food can be integrated into strategic frameworks on food security and nutrition as an overarching goal, as a principle that guides all steps of implementation, and as a tool to strengthen the capacities of duty-bearers and right-holders to make the human right to adequate food reality for all. Moreover, two fact sheets are available on the issue.

New Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests endorsed

14 May 2012, Rome – On 11 May 2012, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) formally endorsed the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT). The Voluntary Guidelines are the result of an unprecedented negotiation process, chaired by the United States that featured broad consultation and participation by 96 national governments, more than 25 civil society organizations, the private sector, nonprofits and farmers’ associations over the course of almost three years.

The Hunger Free Latin America and the Caribbean Initiative wins award

8 May 2012, Madrid - The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) has been awarded by FAO due to its support to the Hunger Free Latin America and the Caribbean Initiative. The award was received by Mr Rafael Garranzo, Director of Cooperation of Latin America and the Caribbean of the AECID, in a ceremony attended by Her Royal Highness Queen Sofia of Spain and Mr José Graziano da Silva, Director General of FAO.

Consensus reached on Voluntary Guidelines for the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests

9 March 2012, Rome – The CFS-led Open Ended Working Group reached a path-breaking consensus on the Voluntary Guidelines for the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VG). This approval marks the final step of a far-reaching and inclusive consultation and negotiation process since 2009, involving 96 states delegations and various other stakeholders, such as UN agencies, civil society organizations and the private sector. The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) will convene a special session in May for the final approval of the VG. The consensus is a major achievement and clear sign of progress also from the right to food perspective.
