Objective of the Technical Meeting

The overall aim is to discuss cold chain development in terms of technological options as well as particular cases for milk, fish, meat, fruits and vegetables that have been successfully implemented in developing regions, in order to identify actions required for expansion of cold chains toward rural transformation in developing countries.

Specific objectives are, to:

  1. Review the current status of cold chain technologies and cases where there have been successful implementation of refrigeration or cooling in the production to distribution chains in developing countries for perishable products, in order to identify barriers to expansion and how to overcome them.


  2. Propose a strategy that addresses the key issues and challenges and actions required to ensure sustainable food cold chains development, including an enabling policy environment and good practices allowing cold chain systems to contribute to: i) food loss reduction, ii) improving market access, income and food security for smallholders, iii) creating job opportunities in rural areas to reduce rural poverty.

 

The meeting will take place at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy.
