Bonne journée de la biodiversité!

22 May 2015

La biodiversité, ou la variété des formes de vie, constitue le pilier du développement durable et de notre bien-être. Nous avons célébré la Journée internationale de la biodiversité le 22 mai.

Today, May 22, we celebrate the International Day of Biodiversity. Show your love and appreciation for the many living things with which we share our planet - from the apple tree in your garden and the many bacteria and fungus keeping its soil healthy to the sometimes so annoying mosquitos that will end up in the stomach of a hungry bird. Biodiversity, or the variety of life, is the foundation for sustainable development and our wellbeing. The different animals, plants and micro-organisms interact and offer goods and services from which we benefit, all for free! These so called ecosystem services play an important role in sustainable agriculture and therefore need to be protected. The International Day of Biodiversity is an occasion to celebrate this rich variety of life living in harmony with us and to raise awareness about its importance for sustainable food production. This year’s theme is sustainable development and it aims to reflect the importance of biodiversity for a sustainable future.
