FAO´s role in supporting the implementation of the Comprehensive Rural Reform for the realization of peace in Colombia
Joint Side Event SP1, SP3, SP5 and IR-2 (RLC) Relevance to the Council’s Agenda: The event raises awareness on territorial rural development and food security in a post-conflict setting. The event will address issues of sustainable management of natural resources, the implementation of the voluntary guidelines to improve land governance for food security and nutrition, land conflict resolution, employment generation strategies under high-biodiverse environments, territorial-food security systems, social protection, and inclusive markets for a poverty reduction strategy as part of the core of both Council and Peace Agreements in Colombia. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
FAO has played an important role in supporting the Colombian Government in the implementation of comprehensive rural development. Along with the European Union and civil society organizations, FAO has been asked by the Government to help implement the Peace Accord 1 regarding the Comprehensive Rural Reform. While the peace accord was not approved in the recent plebiscite, integrated rural reform remains as a priority government policy. The session will discuss the content of the Comprehensive Rural Reform (that was part of the Peace Agreement 1), strategies to promote comprehensive rural development and the role of FAO and other partners in supporting this process and scaling up ongoing related initiatives, with a view to strengthening the link between peace and food security. Consequently, the discussion will focus on the following themes:
