Exploring Cuba's Biodiversity: Welcome Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática to AGRIS!

Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática de Cuba

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through its International System for Agricultural Science and Technology (AGRIS), extends a warm welcome to the Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática (IES) from Cuba as the newest member of the AGRIS Network.

Established in 1986 through the consolidation of several institutes under the Cuban Academy of Sciences, including Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, and Experimental Biology, IES has been a pioneering force in the study of Cuban flora and the preservation of biodiversity.

Dedicated to ecological assessments, reforestation initiatives in tropical regions, and the study of terrestrial mammals, bird communities, freshwater, and brackish fish, IES has emerged as a cornerstone of scientific research in Cuba. Notably, the institute boasts exceptional scientific collections, including the National Herbarium, Mycological Herbarium, Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi, Zoological Collections, and the National Biodiversity Center, which serve as invaluable resources for comprehending and safeguarding Cuba's diverse ecosystems.

By joining AGRIS, IES enriches the network with its extensive knowledge and expertise. Its 87 records cover a wide range of topics, including remote sensing, endemism, endangered species, phytogeographic regionalization, horticulture, agrobiodiversity, and sustainability.

Welcome aboard, Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática!
