Agroecology and the transition to sustainable food systems: A public lecture series at ETH Zurich

The relationship between agroecology, organic farming and food system transformation is explored through a series of public lectures organized by the World Food System Center at ETH Zurich. Bringing together different perspectives, the series examines how agroecological approaches can contribute to more sustainable and resilient food systems, drawing on expert insights and real-world experiences.

The lectures address key themes in agroecology, including soil health, biodiversity, animal health, recycling, input reduction, land and natural resource management, connectivity, fairness, social values and participation. Several sessions focus on the 13 principles of agroecology, offering a framework for understanding the ecological, social and economic dimensions of food system transformation. The series also examines the relationship between agroecology and organic farming, exploring where the two approaches converge and diverge, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with scaling agroecology and organic food systems.

Designed to provide students with conceptual foundations, practical insights and policy perspectives, the collection brings together lectures from different editions of the series, including dedicated sessions on scientific and policy perspectives and the role of agroecology in food system transformation. The recordings offer a learning resource for students, researchers, practitioners and policymakers interested in the principles, implementation and wider implications of agroecology for sustainable agriculture and food systems.
