How Andhra Pradesh is scaling community-managed natural farming
From 11 farms in 2018 to a reported 1.8 million small farms, Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming (APCNF) illustrates how agroecological approaches can expand through farmer networks and community participation. Led largely through women’s self-help groups and supported by state and national institutions in India, the programme combines natural farming practices with soil science, plant science and microbiology. Its practices include year-round soil cover, diversified cropping, improved nutrient cycling and reduced reliance on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
A central feature is the programme’s approach to knowledge sharing. Around 10,000 volunteer trainers support farmers in adopting and adapting practices, while the model aims to progressively increase participation within villages. According to the article, participating farms have recorded first-year income increases of 19 to 36 percent. The approach also seeks to improve soil structure, water retention and crop resilience, although the article presents these outcomes within a broader commentary rather than as a systematic scientific assessment.
Following its recognition with the 2026 Food Planet Prize, the model is expected to expand its international demonstration and learning activities. Practices have already been shared with farmers in Zambia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka, with further engagement planned in other countries. The initiative therefore provides an example of how farmer-to-farmer learning, women’s participation, scientific partnerships and locally adapted practices can contribute to scaling agroecological transitions while maintaining a strong focus on livelihoods, food production and ecosystem functions.
