More than 118 participants from 25 countries gathered in Bogor, Indonesia, in April 2025 to examine the economic foundations needed for agroecology to support sustainable livelihoods. Convened by the Agroecology Fund (AEF) and hosted by the Indonesian Peasants Union (SPI), the Asia Learning Exchange on Agroecology Economies brought together farmer organizations, donors, government representatives, academics and allied movements for six days of dialogue, field visits and strategic reflection. Discussions addressed entrepreneurship, territorial markets, participatory guarantee systems, finance, cooperatives and solidarity economies.

Nine cross-cutting themes emerged, including secure access to land, women’s leadership, youth and intergenerational knowledge, seed sovereignty and biodiversity, grassroots financing and stronger producer–consumer relationships. Participants emphasized democratic cooperatives and territorial markets as important components of agroecology economies. Field visits included SPI’s Food Sovereignty Area in Indramayu, where participating farmers reported halving production costs while maintaining yields through agroecological practices.

The exchange also informed recommendations for AEF’s 2026–2031 strategy. Priorities include directing more funding to farmer organizations, strengthening regional networks, expanding grassroots evidence and knowledge-sharing, and increasing support for women, youth and fisheries. Participants also called for stronger policy engagement and more accessible, trust-based financing. The conclusions reflect the experiences and perspectives shared during the exchange rather than a comparative evaluation of agroecology’s economic performance across Asia.
