Agroecology is examined as both a system of agricultural production and a basis for developing sustainable, fair and inclusive agrifood systems in this 308-page monograph from Ukraine. Published in 2025 by the Institute for Economics and Forecasting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and edited by Olena Borodina, the volume traces the evolution of agroecological thinking and examines the socio-economic dimensions of transitioning towards approaches that better integrate human, animal and ecosystem health.

The authors review existing forms of agroecological activity in Ukraine in relation to European principles of sustainable agricultural and rural development. Particular attention is given to scaling agroecological transitions and the associated changes in agricultural production, knowledge generation and dissemination, socio-economic relations and institutional arrangements. The volume also examines methods for measuring progress, including FAO’s Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation (TAPE) and scoring approaches based on the 10 Elements of Agroecology.

In the context of Ukraine’s European integration, the authors argue for a coordinated policy framework to guide agroecological transition. They propose developing a national roadmap that would identify the stages, instruments and institutional arrangements required for transformation of the agricultural and rural sectors. The monograph is intended for researchers and practitioners working in agricultural economics, sociology, food security, public administration and local governance, as well as teachers and students.
