Collaborative pathways: Building evidence-based insights in rural communication services and landscapes in Asia
Access to reliable information, opportunities for dialogue and trust in information sources influence how rural communities engage with agricultural innovation and development. Published by FAO in 2026, Collaborative pathways: Building evidence-based insights in rural communication services and landscapes in Asia examines how rural communication services (RCS) operate across diverse institutional, social and technological contexts in Asia.
The volume brings together research developed through collaboration between FAO and the Rural Communication Working Group of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR). Five chapters explore rural communication systems in Indonesia, Bangladesh, the Philippines and China. Topics include the roles of government extension services, civil society and private-sector providers; strategies for community-centred internet connectivity in Indonesia; participatory design of the Siargao Climate Field School for farmers and fisherfolk in the Philippines; and the influence of socioeconomic inequalities on access to digital services in Bangladesh.Across the contributions, the volume highlights that digital connectivity alone does not guarantee equitable access to information or meaningful participation. Context-sensitive approaches, collaboration among institutions and communities, and the integration of local knowledge are important considerations for strengthening rural communication services. By presenting empirical research and case studies, the publication provides evidence and perspectives to inform policy dialogue, research and development practice on inclusive communication, agricultural learning and rural livelihoods.
