Turning practice into policy: new reports on Madagascar's agroforestry framework

Near Madagascar’s Masoala Peninsula, farmers are combining chili with cloves and vanilla, restoring degraded soils and diversifying production through agroforestry. These practices offer locally grounded approaches to more resilient agricultural systems and livelihoods, while highlighting the importance of an enabling policy environment to support their wider adoption. An assessment of Madagascar’s agroforestry policy examines how national frameworks can better support the development of agroforestry and connect local experience with policy processes.

The assessment was conducted through the Full Circle Initiative (FCI), implemented by Wyss Academy for Nature and Laboratoire de Recherches Appliquées, in partnership with the Agroforestry Alliance. Local consultants SR Consulting led the study, which included a stakeholder exchange workshop in January 2026. The work has produced two resources which are available for download in French: the original assessment report and a policy brief presenting its key messages for policy engagement.

Delivered in May 2026, the final report provides a basis for discussions on strengthening policy support for agroforestry in Madagascar. The subsequent formatting and circulation of the policy brief through the Agroforestry Alliance’s network provide a practical means of communicating the assessment’s messages to government stakeholders. Together, the resources connect evidence and policy dialogue, drawing attention to the role of national frameworks in supporting agroforestry approaches already being developed by farmers. They can inform further exchanges among practitioners, technical organizations and policymakers on the conditions needed to support agroforestry at scale.
