Geospatial analysis on Lebanon’s vegetation cover
08/10/2025
Nine new datasets have been published on the Agro-informatics Platform within the Land cover channel. The data provides information on Lebanon’s land cover, crop categories and negative vegetation changes in cropland, field crops and grape fields, olive plantations, cereals, fruit trees orchards, as well as deciduous and evergreen forests. Lebanon's cropland and assets have been increasingly threatened by the conflict that began in October 2023, raising concerns over food insecurity. To assess these impacts, a geospatial analysis was conducted to detect significant negative changes in vegetation cover. Baseline land cover in 2023 was generated for further analysis regarding vegetation changes. The assessment compared land cover conditions from October 2019 to 7 October 2023 with those in October 2024, without field validation. Land cover and cropland data are critical resources for analysing the status of agricultural land. Sentinel-2 satellite imagery (10m resolution) was utilized for establishing baseline land cover for 2023.
