New crop type and flood extent data for Pakistan

29/12/2025

Six new datasets have been published on the Agro-informatics Platform. The data focuses on crop types and flood extent in Pakistan. More in detail the content covers three specific regions in Pakistan: the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh ones.

The crop type data is produced at 10 m resolution using a Random Forest classifier trained on province-specific ground samples and AlphaEarth Foundations Satellite Embedding V1 (annual) 2023. Mapping was limited to cropland using the FAO National Land Cover 2021 cropland mask. Accuracy was assessed using a confusion matrix, overall accuracy and kappa, and results were overlaid with the 2025 flood extent to quantify crop-specific impacts.

The flood extent data have a 3 m resolution and show areas detected as inundated during the monsoon season. The datasets support rapid situational awareness and impact assessment, including overlay analysis with crop type and land cover data to quantify affected agricultural areas.
