New crop type mapping data for Egypt
04/08/2026
The data contains information on crop types for three different areas in Egypt: the Zankalon irrigation area, the Side Ghazi irrigation area and the Mallawi area, all in the Nile Delta region.
The data highlights typical summer and winter cropping patterns in the region for the period 2023-2024.
The classification derives from remote sensing (Sentinel-2 satellite imagery) and ground truth data. Field data has been collected from 15 May 2023 to 15 October 2024, including summer growing seasons 2023 and 2024 (S2, from May to October), and winter season 2023-2024 (S1, from October to May).
The maps were produced as part of the FAO "Monitoring Land and Water Productivity by Remote Sensing" (WaPOR Phase 2) project in partnership with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation of Egypt.
