Los medicamentos antimicrobianos desempeñan un papel fundamental en el tratamiento de enfermedades y su uso es fundamental para proteger tanto la salud humana como la animal. Sin embargo, las sustancias antimicrobianas suelen utilizarse indebidamente para tratar y prevenir enfermedades en el sector ganadero, acuícola y en la producción agrícola. Estas acciones suelen estar asociadas con el riesgo potencial de aparición y propagación de microorganismos resistentes a los antimicrobianos.

Datos clave

 En 2019 fallecieron 5 millones de personas en todo el mundo por causas relacionadas con la resistencia bacteriana a los antimicrobianos, incluidos 1,3 millones de personas fallecidas como resultado directo de bacterias resistentes a los antibióticos (The Lancet)

En los animales se utilizan 27 clases diferentes de antimicrobianos

En 2011 el mercado mundial de sanidad animal tenía un valor equivalente a 22 000 millones de USD (OCDE)

118 países han aportado datos cuantitativos sobre el uso de antimicrobianos en animales por uno o más años entre 2015 y 2017, un aumento desde los 89 que presentaron datos en 2015
