Bioeconomy for Sustainable Food and Agriculture

Bio-innovations on the ground

Bioeconomy innovations are helping communities develop practical solutions to reduce waste and pollution, use resources more efficiently and create new livelihood opportunities across agrifood systems. FAO supports the development and scaling of these solutions through projects and partnerships that address challenges such as organic waste, plastic pollution, food loss and waste, and urban sustainability.

Black Soldier Fly innovationCote D'Ivoire

Abidjan, home to 6 million people, is experiencing rapid growth at a rate of +187,000 inhabitants annually, generating 4,000 tons of food waste daily. Through the BioDAF project, FAO introduced a circular solution: black soldier fly larvae that convert organic waste into protein-rich animal feed and organic fertilizer, reducing pollution, cutting imports and creating jobs for women and youth. 

The initiative benefits Abidjan's municipalities and residents, waste pre-collectors, women’s associations, unemployed individuals, and youth. Poultry, horticulture, and fish farmers also benefit from the cost-effective, high-quality agricultural inputs, contributing to the economic empowerment of diverse communities in the region.

Partners and networks 

Implemented with the Autonomous District of Abidjan and its Circular Economy Institute, the Italian NGO Centre Abel, and the Living Soil Association. Further scaled through the UN Global Pulse Accelerator Programme and FAO’s Flexible Voluntary Contribution (FVC) mechanism. The project aligns with Côte d'Ivoire's national circular economy priorities and is designed as a replicable model for other cities.
