FAO's Data Lab

AI Fundamentals

The Data Lab Contributes to "AI Fundamentals"

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly reshaping how organizations operate, and FAO is no exception. With breakthroughs in tools like large language models (LLMs) and generative AI (genAI), new opportunities are emerging to enhance how we manage data, produce knowledge, and make decisions. To help FAO colleagues better understand this evolving landscape, the Data Lab co-organizes with members of the FAO AI Community of Practice an internal webinar series: AI Fundamentals.

Running every second Wednesday (from 9th of April until mid-July 2025), it is designed to provide a practical introduction to AI concepts and tools, with a particular focus on how they apply to FAO’s work. It is aimed at non-technical colleagues who want to understand what AI is, how it works, and where it can make a difference in their daily tasks.

What makes the AI Fundamentals webinar series unique is that it is entirely led by FAO colleagues. The sessions showcase real projects, challenges, and innovations from across the Organization, including work by the Data Lab. Each one-hour session combines short explanations with live demos and concrete examples, always leaving room for discussion and feedback.

Topics include machine learning basics, genAI tools for text and images, geospatial AI applications, communication and publication use cases, and the role of governance in responsible AI adoption. It is not just about understanding the technology, but it is also about exploring how FAO personnel can use these tools to work smarter, communicate more effectively, and support evidence-based action in food and agriculture.
