This is Muhammad Abdul Wahed Tomal, Research Assistant, Access to Information Programme, Chief Adviser's Office. With technical assistance from MDG and e- Development Project, UNDP Bangladesh, this project is currently doing some research on m-Governance. It has been observed that the impact of mobile phone use in public service delivery sectors (like SSC/HSC result Publishing, Hajj Management etc.) is huge. But the use of mobile phone in Agriculture sector is very limited. On the other hand, some private companies have already entered the market with some innovative mobile service related solutions, which might create interest among the Agriculture sector to apply those innovative ideas. I would love to see some discussion on m-Agriculture with focus on PPP.

Dear Tomal, IRRI with the Philippines Rice Research Institute has been working with mobile phones for information to extension and farmers. There has also been a link to a village computer. The experience has been positive in the context of the Philippines for which mobile phones have a lot of other uses. In the context of Bangladesh it may be that the mobile phone network of Grameen Phone has use for market information for high value crops so tied to a supermarket type model. I am still not sure for the majority of more marginal farmers (men and women) that mobile phone use is critical. In fact many of our clients have food deficit and hunger months. Noel
