Hi everyone! I am Olive Tiu, the Regional Director of the Philippine Information Agency in Eastern Visayas, in the Philippines. My office is located in Tacloban City, Leyte in Eastern Visayas Region. The region covers six provinces and three cities - the provinces of Leyte, Biliran Southern Leyte, Samar, Northern Samar and Eastern Samar; and the cities of Tacloban, Ormoc, Calbayog, Baybay, Maasin, Catbalogan and Borongan. Eastern Visayas is mostly agricultural, thus, the government is dealing with mostly farmer and fisherfolk, hence, the thrust now is to enhance agricultural productivity to achieve food security. As an information agency, our office know how mobile phones can help farmers in the hinterlands to have access necessary to improve their productivity; how fast mobile phones can relay warnings of typhoons and other calamities; and how mobile phones can relay information on latest agricultural technologies. I know that by participating in this forum, I will be able to learn so many things which in turn I can inform the people, especially the farmers, the policy-makers and the decision makers.
