Agri-pedia is an Information Communication Technology (ICT) platform, developed to close the Information Communication (Info-Com) gap between the primary farmer producer and the technology owned by academic institutions, commercial farmers and the agricultural business sector.

The objective envisaged, is that an Agricultural BI framework will provide strategic agricultural information to the primary producers of Africa. These users will range from government officials, academics (training and research), emerging agricultural producers and commercial agricultural producers. The Agricultural BI framework will consist of a set of tools which will coordinate and share data, information and knowledge. All this data will be stored in an expanded knowledge warehouse utilising Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This knowledge warehouse not only contains the producers’ relevant information but also the relevant information from the industry, academic institutions and government. With fast growing internet-access and mobile technology in Africa, it is envisaged that potential users will be accessing and engaging in this new “cyber” agriculture platform using their mobile devices. The primary producers using this BI Framework, will empower themselves with the latest knowledge about agriculture, which will allow farmers to productively contribute to the bread basket of the world.

The BI Framework is driven by the following five components:

1. Agri – info         : A comprehensive academic Encyclopedia of Agriculture.
2. Agri – manage   : A set of applications and tools for general and risk management.
3. Agri – learn       : An Academic Agriculture e-Learning system.
4. Agri – trade       : All in one online business basket for buying and selling.
5. Agri- chat          : A knowledge management tool, using social media for communication.
