Area of Expertise
Pest identification and monitoring — Recognizing common insect pests (e.g., armyworms, aphids, stem borers, or bean flies) that affect maize, soybeans, and other crops in Uganda/East Africa, including scouting for signs of infestation, counting pest levels, and understanding economic thresholds for intervention.
Disease diagnosis — Identifying plant diseases (fungal, bacterial, viral) such as maize streak virus, gray leaf spot, soybean rust, or root rots, through visible symptoms on leaves, stems, pods, or roots.
Weed identification and management — Spotting problematic weeds early (especially when small), classifying them, and noting pressure levels to inform herbicide or mechanical control decisions in conservation agriculture systems.
Crop growth stages and health assessment — Understanding phenological stages of key crops (maize, soybeans, etc.), evaluating plant vigor, stand establishment, nutrient deficiencies (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus, or micronutrient symptoms), and overall field uniformity.
Nutrient deficiency and soil-related issues — Observing visual signs of nutrient stress, waterlogging, drought effects, or soil compaction, especially in the context of climate-smart and regenerative farming practices used at Asili Farms.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles — Applying scouting data to support decisions on cultural, biological, and chemical controls while minimizing pesticide use and promoting sustainability.
Field scouting techniques — Using systematic methods like walking patterns (e.g., zigzag or W-shaped transects), root digs, plant sampling, traps, or tools (hand lens, knife for splitting stalks/pods), and accurately recording observations for agronomists or farm managers.
Data recording and reporting — Documenting findings clearly (pest/disease counts, locations, growth stages, photos if needed) to enable timely decisions on inputs, treatments, or adjustments for optimal yields.

Joshua is a dedicated agronomy enthusiast and former crop scout with hands-on experience in field monitoring, pest and disease identification, and sustainable crop management on large-scale maize, soybean, and sunflower farms in Uganda. Passionate about bridging traditional scouting with digital tools, he is eager to contribute to precision agriculture and climate-smart farming initiatives. Holding a [relevant degree, e.g., diploma in crop production and management from Busitema university, Joshua combines strong observational skills with an interest in e-agriculture technologies like remote sensing and mobile advisory apps to support higher yields and resilient practices. Open to opportunities in agronomic support, digital extension, or farm data analytics."
