Delivering Restoration Outcomes for Biodiversity and Human Well-being: Resource Guide to Target 2 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

The Delivering Restoration Outcomes for Biodiversity and Human Well-being Resource Guide is a collaborative publication from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER). This guide is specifically designed to support countries in achieving Target 2 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF), which calls for restoring 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030.

Target 2 of the KM-GBF is critical for reversing biodiversity loss and restoring ecosystem functions and services across terrestrial, inland water, and marine ecosystems. This Resource Guide serves as a practical tool to help countries and their partners translate these global restoration commitments into concrete national actions. It provides a comprehensive overview of restoration planning, implementation, and monitoring practices that align with Target 2.

Key highlights:
  • Focus on ecosystem restoration: The guide emphasizes Target 2, which is essential for restoring degraded ecosystems to enhance biodiversity, improve ecological connectivity, and strengthen ecosystem resilience. It provides insight into how this target is interconnected with other KM-GBF goals and targets, including spatial planning, protected areas, and sustainable production.
  • National action plans: A core objective of the guide is to assist countries in integrating restoration goals into their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). This includes practical advice on setting national restoration targets, assessing ecosystem degradation, and prioritizing restoration efforts in line with KM-GBF commitments.
  • Tools and resources: The voluntary guide offers key tools and strategies to support large-scale restoration initiatives. It covers essential topics such as defining restoration goals, planning across ecosystems, and developing monitoring and reporting protocols to ensure the effective delivery of restoration outcomes.
  • Human rights-based and inclusive approaches: The guide also stresses the importance of incorporating Indigenous Peoples’ rights and human rights-based approaches into restoration activities. Recognizing the unique knowledge and governance systems of Indigenous communities is vital to achieving successful restoration outcomes. The guide promotes equitable and inclusive restoration practices that contribute to the achievement of multiple KM-GBF targets.

A comprehensive approach to restoration

The Resource Guide is designed to foster collaboration among governments, practitioners, and partners in the global restoration effort. It encourages the development of large-scale restoration programs that are tailored to local and national contexts, while also contributing to global biodiversity goals. By aligning national efforts with Target 2, countries can make significant progress in restoring ecosystems, recovering biodiversity, and ensuring the well-being of their people.

This publication serves as an essential resource for translating global restoration targets into tangible, on-the-ground outcomes that promote ecosystem recovery, biodiversity conservation, and human well-being.
