EIFAAC Managers and Scientists gathered in Budapest to discuss developments in inland fisheries and aquaculture in Europe
The European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission (EIFAAC) held a joint meeting of the EIFAAC Management Committee and Technical and Scientific Committee at FAO’s Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia in Budapest on .
The meeting discussed progress in the implementation of the EIFAAC work programme 2024-2026, reviewed draft resolutions and recommendations, and discussed the preparations for EIFAAC 33, which is scheduled to take place in Riga, Latvia, in the period .
The meeting expressed appreciation for the progress made by several projects, including:
- Management / threat of aquatic invasive species in Europe
- Developing advice on sustainable management actions on cormorant populations
- The problems and challenges of climate change and its impact on inland aquatic resources and fisheries of Europe
- Joint EIFAAC/ICES/GFCM Working Group on Eel (WGEEL)
The Framework for a European Management Plan for the Great Cormorant was reviewed and cleared by the Management Committee and Technical and Scientific Committee for distribution by the EIFAAC Secretariat to the Member States and the European Parliament, which have been requesting the preparation of this regional plan. The formal adoption of the framework management plan by EIFAAC is foreseen to take place at EIFAAC 33 next year. The meeting recommended that activities towards implementation of the framework plan should start as soon as possible.
The meeting expressed an interest in strengthening collaboration between Eurofish and EIFAAC and planned for the organization of webinars on technical subjects in the first semester of 2026. The EIFAAC Secretariat, project managers and scientists will inform the membership and interested stakeholders soon about these upcoming webinars.
