To enhance the resilience of populations affected by food insecurity and malnutrition and minimize the impact of food and nutrition shocks in West Africa.

Key partners:

United Nations (UN) agencies, Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS)/Regional Training Centre for Agrometeorology and Operational Hydrology and their Applications (AGRHYMET), the Famine and Early Warning Systems Network, national partners (statistical services from the Ministries of Agriculture, national early warning systems and nutrition services), Permanent Secretariat of the G5 Sahel, the Economic Community of West African States and research centers.

Beneficiaries reached:

Regional bodies and institutions, governments, NGOs, civil society stakeholders and affected populations.

Activities implemented:
  • Promote resilient livelihoods within the framework of IASC, RDT, FSNWG, EPR WG, the Regional Resilience Working Group and UNOWAS.
  • Contributed to regional humanitarian strategies, identified priorities as well as funding needs, formulated fundraising advocacy actions, and monitored and reported against regional indicators.
  • Ensured that the humanitarian and livelihood situation was adequately addressed.
  • Carried out food security and nutrition analyses (i.e. Cadre Harmonisé).
  • Contributed to joint crop, market and food security assessments.
  • Shared information and analysis for regional advocacy on the food security situation in the region (monthly updates, joint position paper, etc.).
  • Contributed to the UNISS-G5 Sahel regional programming initiatives through the Regional Resilience Working Group
  • Provided strategic and technical support to FAO’s offices in the subregion, including on DRR and resilience analysis and measurement.
  • Promoted knowledge management for risk reduction and resilience to reduce vulnerabilities at household and community levels.
  • Supported country office through the deployment of experts for the implementation of various cash transfer projects.
  • Developed a joint position paper together with UNICEF and WFP to address the immediate needs of vulnerable populations as well as longer-term structural challenges.
  • Launched the Lake Chad Basin Crisis Response Strategy (2017‒2019)
  • Strengthened the capacities of CILSS and national governments in resilience analysis and measurement.
  • Strengthened strategic partnerships with regional stakeholders (CILSS, G5 Sahel, etc.)
  • Contributed to build consensus among stakeholders on the food security and nutrition situation.
  • Improved early warning systems in the region through crop, market and food security assessment missions.
  • Increased awareness on the food security situation in the region to address the needs and scale up joint response.
  • Guided decision makers on where to channel resources to strengthen household resilience thanks to the provision of strategic and technical support to FAO’s country offices in the region.
  • Strengthened the capacity of government centralized and decentralized technical staff and implementing partners.
  • Enhanced outreach, resource mobilization and advocacy activities at country office level.
  • Enhanced synergies with other UN agencies, national and regional institutions, and civil societies through coordinated regional humanitarian response strategies.
