Action Area 1 – Risk monitoring

In order to manage risks associated with FAST diseases, robust mechanisms should be established to collect, analyze and disseminate risk information to relevant stakeholders in Member Nations and other countries.

Three key sub-activities:

  • 1.1 FAST global surveillance and virus intelligence

Sub-activity 1.1 has two overall aims. The first is to sustain the network of the World Organisation for Animal Health-FAO FMD Reference Laboratories, providing support for the collection and transport of FAST disease samples from areas deemed at risk.

The second is to develop innovative digitalized systems to streamline collection, analysis, and reporting of risk information related to FAST diseases from high-risk areas.

  • 1.2 Enable risk monitoring

Sub-activity 1.2 should implement risk monitoring tools track and assess the risk of FAST introduction into Member Nations, particularly from neighboring and other high-risk areas.

This sub-activity will foster the development and adoption of risk information sharing systems and seek to establish agreements among countries in regions susceptible to FAST outbreaks and it has the scope to conduct rapid risk assessments for FAST in Europe and other regions, during periods of heightened risk associated with specific events or conditions.

  • 1.3 FAST early warning

This sub-activity will implement risk mapping initiatives and capacity-development programmes which should strengthen early warning systems for FAST diseases in high-risk areas of Europe and other vulnerable regions.

It will also contribute to improving both passive and active surveillance, including vector surveillance, in high-risk areas of Europe, its neighboring regions, and other connected regions susceptible to FAST introduction.
