Evaluation evidence on forests and forestry
Forests and trees play a vital role in food security, nutrition, livelihoods, biodiversity and climate resilience. They are also closely connected to the transformation of agrifood systems, particularly in rural areas where communities depend directly on forest resources for their food, income and well-being.
These contributions are at the centre of the 10th World Forest Week, taking place at FAO headquarters in Rome from 28 September to 2 October 2026 alongside the 28th Session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO 28).
Under the theme “Forests for food, resilience and prosperity”, the week brings together FAO Members, partner organizations, experts and young people through a programme of events and high-level dialogues. Discussions cover a wide range of interconnected issues, including forest and landscape restoration, integrated fire management, forest monitoring, sustainable forest-based bioeconomy, wildlife management, finance, innovation and the contribution of forests to sustainable urban development.
Over the years, the FAO Office of Evaluation has assessed a broad range of initiatives connected to forests and forestry.By examining what has worked, what has not and why, evaluations can help identify lessons from the implementation of policies, programmes and projects. They provide evidence on the relevance, effectiveness and sustainability of FAO’s support and on the conditions that enable or constrain progress in different national and regional contexts.
To mark the 10th World Forest Week, the Office of Evaluation has brought together a selection of these evaluations. The collection provides an entry point for policymakers, practitioners, partners and other stakeholders interested in exploring evidence from FAO’s work and considering it can inform future action.
