Bamboo and rattan are ideal resources for development that integrates poverty reduction and environmental sustainability, and the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) priority is giving people at all levels the knowledge and skills they need for long-term development involving bamboo and rattan. Nowadays furniture is manufactured in the raw material producing countries and so the benefits of the high value-addition that manufacturing imparts remain in the producing country. The following technology describes how to set-up a rattan furniture making unit and describes basic steps of furniture making, as well as financial aspects of setting up a furniture making unit, based on data and information collected during a survey of some medium-sized rattan furniture factories in Malaysia.
