Cross Country Analysis of Agriculture and Agricultural Policy of South-eastern European Countries in Comparison with the European Union

Agriculture in the South-eastern European countries (SEEs) is very diverse in terms of natural and structural conditions, development status, and the manifold production potentials. It carries prominent historical and social components and great economic importance to rural development. There are noticeable structural and technological deficiencies. Another significant factor is the depopulation of marginal areas, which has progressed to an alarming extent, especially in the central part of the region. Good statistical data is the basis of a proper analysis and overview of agriculture. The data from the individual countries differs widely in its scope and quality. With the exception of Croatia, which is already an EU member, no SEE country has fully harmonized its agricultural statistics with EU standards. Therefore, direct comparisons of the data and indicators between the countries are often questionable.
