Agricultural Water Interventions and Farm Income in Andhra Pradesh

A paper published in the journalAgricultural Systems analyzes the impact of agricultural water interventions (AWI) on farm incomes by using the Kothapally watershed in Andhra Pradesh in India as a case study. AWI refers to strategies and techniques such as on-site soil and water conservation strategies, irrigation and damming of rivers. Findings from previous studies on the impact of AWI have suggested that the adoption of AWI improves yields in tropical dryland agriculture mainly because of its capacity to bridge droughts and dry spells. However, previous studies have not performed an in-depth analysis of the biophysical changes of AWI adoption and its economic implications, particularly on farmer incomes. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing the potential of AWI to improve farm incomes by assessing the impact of AWI and crop choice on incomes under different climatic and environmental conditions.
