The Forest and Farm Facility at COP30

Currently taking place in Brazil, the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) is active at this year’s climate conference, highlighting the concrete solutions that forest and farm producers and Indigenous Peoples offer to the climate crisis and calling for urgent support and finance to realize their potential.
If you are interested in following our activities relating to COP30, here are some of the ways in which we are contributing to the conference and its goal to accelerate progress in climate action.
Launch of TERRA
Set to launch on 19 November in the Forest Pavilion at COP30, TERRA (Together for the Expansion of Resilient and Restorative Agroforestry) is a vital new initiative that aims to fast-track the transition of the world’s family farmers from conventional farming practices to agroecological and agroforestry techniques. When adopted at scale, agroecology and agroforestry practices can have a major impact on addressing the climate crisis and on creating more resilient, adaptive and sustainable food systems.
TERRA is a partnership between the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture (MDA) of Brazil and several other founding partners, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) through the FFF.
Supporting regional and global federations
The FFF has been a long-standing supporter of regional and global federations of smallholder farmers and Indigenous Peoples through its partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This has helped strengthen their voice and be more visible on the global stage to advocate for more support and farmer-friendly finance. Many of these groups, including the Asia Farmers Association (AFA), the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities (GATC) and the World Rural Forum, are active at COP30 this week.
Upcoming events include:
- 17 November: an AFA side event on Inclusive Finance
- 19 November: a WRF roundtable in the Blue Zone Pavilion about how family farmers are leading the global effort on climate adaptation
- 19 November: a WRF event in the Brazil Pavilion centered on global leadership for resilient and sustainable food systems
- 20 November: an AFA and WRF session in the Blue Zone Pavilion about family farming and the Paris Agreement looking at farming and climate mitigation
- 20 November: a WRF side event in the Blue Zone Pavilion focusing on community-led forest economies and how to shift policy and finance for people, nature and climate
Accelerating progress through activation groups
To accelerate progress, the COP30 Action Agenda is centered around six key themes, or axes. The FFF’s activity focuses on Axis 2: Stewarding Forests, Oceans and Biodiversity, and Axis 3: Transforming Agriculture and Food Systems.
In the lead up to COP30, the FFF has been part of two activation groups through workshops and meetings to develop plans to accelerate climate solutions, and these groups will meet face-to-face at COP30. The activation groups are focusing on:
- The development of more resilient, adaptive and sustainable food systems, under Axis 3. TERRA is an initiative resulting from this activation group.
- The development of investments to halt and reverse deforestation and forest degradation, under Axis 2. Launched last week at COP30, the Tropical Forests Forever Fundwhich will compensate countries for preserving the forest resulted from this activation group.
