The basket of products – Exchange of experiences meeting – 8-16 October, Mexico

The concept of value chains for the ‘basket of products’ seeks to recognize the reality of most traditional farming systems. Most family farmers, indigenous peoples and natural resource-dependent producers manage and often sell a range of different products to maintain their livelihoods and to optimize the use of different elements of the productive landscapes they live in. Rural markets offer a wide range of these products from their surrounding region. However the predominant model of vertical value chains focuses on single commodities. A number of market campaigns and certification schemes seek to improve the sustainability of products, but very few successfully associate a basket of products with indigenous and traditional land management systems that ensure a resilient landscape and sustainable livelihoods.

The event will allow producer organization to share experiences in the value chains native cocoa, coffee, vanilla and honey products that are leaders of the basket of products. Sustainable production models and access to financing to introduce bio-enterprises in the value chains of the basket of products will be discussed.

A dialogue will be opened with government authorities and representatives of producer organizations on aspects concerning public policies, strategies and government programmes and plans that can concretely support producers in native cocoa, coffee, vanilla and honey value chains.

World Food Day (WFD) will be celebrated during the event. Indeed, healthy and nutritious diets require a diversification of food systems. Much can be learned from traditional indigenous food systems and from developing more integrated agroforestry approaches.
