“This comprehensive data collection is a reflection of the outstanding collaboration between countries, partner organizations and our dedicated team of experts to deliver reliable and transparent insights into the world’s forest resources,” said Anssi Pekkarinen, FAO Senior Forestry Officer.

FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessment

Conducted by FAO, the FRA is the world’s most comprehensive and authoritative assessment of forest resources. It provides essential information for understanding the condition, extent, management and use of forest resources globally.

The ongoing assessment, FRA 2025, examines the status of, and trends in, more than 60 forest-related variables in 236 countries and areas from 1990 to 2025. Released every five years, the 2025 edition comes at a critical time ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP) in Brazil, marking a significant period for the world’s forests.

FRA 2025 data were collected using commonly agreed terms and definitions and guidelines through a transparent, traceable reporting process. Officially nominated National Correspondents from 194 countries and areas reported their national data to this latest edition with data for the remaining countries and areas analysed by the FAO based on best available information. The country reporting process was supported by a series of 14 workshops from February to November 2023.

The GFOI Plenary is the major global gathering for countries, donors, development partners and practitioners working in the forest monitoring sector. The theme for this year’s plenary is “Forests and the marvel of monitoring”.

Broader discussions will focus on how we can strengthen the connections between different forest monitoring forums, such as how countries can be best supported to leverage their forest monitoring capabilities for greenhouse gas estimation, forest fires, commodities and biodiversity monitoring.

The launch of the FRA 2025 results is a major highlight of the plenary for this year. We invite you to take part in this high-level event – either in person or online. Spots are limited and filling up quickly, so be sure to register soon to secure your place.
