One of the major issues in agri-food systems is the profitability of the farming systems for small-holder farmers in most developing countries. Unless farmers improve their profit and financial wellbeing from farming and related activities, it is difficult to sustain the agri-food systems. The reality is that smallholders gain very little from crop farming alone and something has to be done to increase farmers' income. One opportunity is to link renewable energy (specifically solar energy) production with crop farming, which is being experimented in India and some other developing countries. The upscaling of this combined solar energy-crop production system is critical to enhance farmers' income, and to attain the promised doubling of farmers' oncome by the Government of India. Dr. Ashok Gulati has hihglighted this opportunity for small scale farmers in India and he proposed a mechanism to upscale and outscale the solar energy- crop farmiing systems by involving private sector Green Energy comapnies, Corporate Social Responsibility funding, and government support.
