Rural women platform for Latin America and the Caribbean

For FAO, gender equality is key to ending hunger and poverty. Through its 2020–2030 Global Policy on Gender Equality and the Regional Gender Strategy for Latin America and the Caribbean, the Organization promotes equality in access to resources, opportunities, representation in decision-making spaces, and equitable distribution of work, with special attention to rural, Indigenous, young, and Afro-descendant women.

Since 2016, FAO has led the Regional Campaign “Rural Women, Women with Rights”, an intersectoral initiative in partnership with 33 government institutions, civil society organizations, UN agencies, research and education centers, and the Inter-American system. The campaign works tirelessly to promote the rights and empowerment of rural women in all their diversity.

Accelerating Rural Women’s Empowerment and Environmental Sustainability Programme

In August 2024, FAO launched the Accelerating Rural Women’s Empowerment and Environmental Sustainability Programme, a regional initiative piloted in the Dominican Republic and Honduras. The programme seeks to recognize, promote, and support the potential of rural women producers to contribute to and benefit from economic growth, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem restoration.

International Year of the Woman Farmer

For 2026, the United Nations General Assembly has designated the International Year of the Woman Farmer. FAO, together with other UN agencies, will lead the observance of this special year, raising awareness of the crucial role of women in food security and sustainable development.

2030 agenda

These efforts are aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality), as well as contributing to other goals such as poverty eradication (SDG 1), reduction of inequalities (SDG 10), and climate action (SDG 13), among others.
