What we do

© FAO

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Our goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. With 195 members - 194 countries and the European Union, FAO works in over 130 countries worldwide.

Join us in creating a world without hunger and poverty!

FAO supports governments and partners to design the right policies and programmes to end hunger and promote food security and sustainable agriculture for millions of people around the world.

The FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31 seeks to support the 2030 Agenda through the transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable, agrifood systems for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind. This transition depends on the coherence of agrifood systems with other systems, including the environmental, health, social protection and educational systems. Increased multi-stakeholder approaches are therefore more important than ever.

With many of the goals in the 2030 Agenda off-track, the need to engage all actors at all levels becomes all the more pressing. Today’s challenges require cooperation, not only across borders but across the whole of society.

FAO Liaison Office in Geneva and the International Geneva

The United Nations (UN) Geneva environment is rich with a variety of potential themes, partners and opportunities. The “International Geneva” is indeed a main place of synthesis of the economic, environmental and social pillars of sustainable development, at the crossroads of FAO’s mandate and the UN priorities.

The FAO Liaison Office in Geneva (FAO in Geneva), located in the historical Palais des Nations, is working with partners to achieve FAO’s corporate goal and the wider Sustainable Development Agenda. It works as an advocacy and partnership platform, to ensure FAO’s role and impact is well understood as an agency which enjoys a high level of confidence and trust globally, both amongst recipient nations and partners and as active contributor to intra-UN cooperation.

In this context, the FAO Liaison Office in Geneva focuses on topics to which it can add value considering the very substantive nature of Geneva-based activities. This gives the Organization great opportunities to forward its mandate and values and pursue its strategic goals.

FAO in Geneva is working towards three broad objectives:
  1. FAO’s contribution to Agrifood systems transformation is championed in the International Geneva and Switzerland.
  2. Geneva-based deliberations are monitored, analyzed, informed, and reported to strategically position FAO in line with its mandate.
  3. Relationships are forged between FAO and relevant International Geneva and Switzerland actors, to advance the implementation of FAO’s Strategic Framework.
