Government of Mexico announces agreement with private sector actors to lower prices for some basic food items

06/10/2022,

On 3 October 2022, the Government of Mexico announced a voluntary agreement with 16 private sector actors to reduce prices of 24 basic food items by 8 percent by the end of February 2023. They include, among others: rice, maize tortilla, sliced bread, pasta, black beans, sugar, vegetable oil, eggs and meat, as well as some fruits and vegetables. The agreement aims to contain rising food inflation, which, in August 2022, was up 15 percent on an annual basis.

In addition, the government will promote domestic production of cereals and temporarily suspend exports of white maize and beans, although details of these measures are not yet available.
